Stormwater drains in Chennai to be de-silted in 15 days

Waterlogging is one important issue in Chennai and because of waterlogging the movement of people, vehicles etc get slowed down.

The corporation commissioner of Chennai, Mr. G. Prakash revealed that the Chennai Corporation would de-silt stormwater drains in 15 days to prevent waterlogging. He mentioned that work on de-silting 2000km of drains has been divided into 311 packages. He added that information from all the locations in Chennai where the de-silting was completed has been collected by the corporation. After the verification of data on the latitude and longitude of the location, the bill would be settled.

It is important to note that the number of vulnerable points was 1200 in the year 2015 and it has reduced to 150 now. Across the city of Chennai, relief boats would be stationed by the Chennai Corporation for the sake of people.

The corporation commissioner of Chennai then spoke about how the contact details of the officials would be shared to facilitate the rescue operations. For disaster preparedness, the civic body has identified as many as 176 relief centres. Information is as many as 44 mobile and static medical teams have been formed in Chennai. For the sake of disaster response, a total of 18 mobile high mast lights have been installed. It must be noted that for the positioning of NDRF teams for rescue operations at least 52 locations in Chennai have been selected. During the monsoon, 4 common kitchens would be functioning.

For the sake of helping the residents of Chennai and to coordinate with the officials during the disaster, Chennai Corporation had established a control room with 75 staff members. It is said that the residents could call helpline 1913 to report civic issues during the monsoon. Officials explained how at least 570 motor pumps would be used to pump out water during the rains.
