DPR by CRRT and Chennai Metro Water for restoration of Chennai waterways

On Thursday, 11th July 2019, the chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy, announced that Chennai River Restoration Trust or CRRT and Chennai metro water would prepare a Detailed Project Report or DPR. The major objective behind this DPR was to restore Chennai’s waterways and to improve its sewage network.
It was revealed by the chief minister that the project would cost an amount of nearly Rs 2371 crores and the project would be implemented between 2019 and 2023. Information gathered is this was among many measures that were announced under Rule 110 in the Assembly meeting.
The proposals to arrest sewage pollution of the waterways including Cooum and Adyar Rivers, Buckingham canal plus construction of sewage treatment plants and strengthening the sewage networks in Chennai etc would be chalked out by the project report. Presently, work is going on for eco-restoration of Cooum and Adyar rivers.
One import ant piece of information is to reduce the water stress in Chennai city a comprehensive policy would be formulated. Means to reduce pollution in the water bodies, supply of reclaimed water to the industries and establish a dedicated grid for recycled water would be considered in the comprehensive policy.
It must be noted that Chennai metro water would prepare DPR of utilizing tertiary treated waste water. It is said that this would be part of efforts to expand the groundwater recharge plus saving fresh water resources in the water starved Chennai. For groundwater recharge and to address the needs of the residents of Chennai city, nearly 260 million litres of sewage would be treated and blended in water bodies around Chennai. It was finally mentioned by the chief minister in the Assembly that similar steps would be taken to use reclaimed water for industrial supply and groundwater recharge in places like Coimbatore, Erode, Trichy and Salem.
