The State Government of Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education, K. P. Anbazhagan has informed that there would be no hike in the academic fees in all the private engineering colleges for this academic year.

Appeals and proposals were submitted on behalf of the self-financed private engineering colleges to increase the academic fees citing various reasons including the high increase in cost of living to the Academic Fixing Committee headed by the judge Balasubramanian.

Meanwhile, Anna University announced an increase in the semester academic fees for its 4 sections and the member colleges after a gap of 17 years. Subsequently, information was gathered that there would be a hike in the academic fees in the self-financed private colleges as well! This caused a great shock among the parents of the students.

Meanwhile, questions regarding this hike were raised when K. P. Anbazhagan, TN State Minister for Higher Education when he participated and inaugurated in the event of the 1st day of the commencement of counselling for admission in the Chennai Taramani Central Polytechnic on Tuesday (25th June).

The self-financed private engineering colleges had appealed and submitted a petition seeking approval to increase the academic face citing the reasons including the rise in cost of living.

However, the general practice is that the academic fees in self-financed colleges are to be revised only once in 3 years. Thus, there would be no hike this academic year in the self-financed private engineering college. Thus, as per existing practice, the students joining under the state government quota will be charged only Rs. 55000.

Thus, in the current academic year, there has been a hike in the academic fees only7 in the 4 sections and the 13 member colleges functioning under Anna University. In this regard, the semester fees which was Rs. 9000 has been increased to Rs. 15000.
