An apartment complex located at Thoraipakkam in OMR now making sensational piece of news. Information is this apartment complex not only treats sewage generated there, but the complex also provides the treated sewage water free of cost to the Chennai Corporation. The main purpose of this was to water plants and trees present on the roads and in the parks.

The president of Aldea apartment owners association, Mr. Hariharan spoke about how till 2 months back the treated water was released into an open canal behind their apartment complex. It was objected by those people who lived nearby. He added that later a team of corporation officials visited the apartment complex and checked the water quality. The corporation official assured that the water quality was good and it could be released into the open canal.

It is important to mention here that the corporation officials requested the association not to release treated water into the open canal as others were objecting that. The corporation officials offered to take the treated water for their own usage. Mr. Hariharan pointed out that the corporation wanted to use the treated water to water the plants and trees plus water many parks maintained by them.

It is amazing to note that as much as 80,000 litres of sewage is produced in this apartment complex at Thoraipakkam. Out of 80,000 litres as much as 60,000 litres gets treated. Point is half this water gets treated further and used to flush the toilets in the complex. To water the park in the open space reserve, another 10,000 litres of water is used. The rest of the water is taken away by 2 water tankers belonging to the corporation.

Mr. Hariharan later mentioned about how more amounts of sewage could be treated if the corporation wants to use the treated water for their own. He added that if the corporation increases the frequency of the tanker trips from their complex then more water could be provided.  It is worth mentioning that some private water tankers have also approached this apartment complex but the association is reluctant to deal with the private tankers.

The end users must be known otherwise it would not be possible to sell the treated sewage water to the private tankers. This was confirmed by Mr. Hariharan later. The superb piece of news is the association has got plans to plant saplings along roads in the area and water them by using the treated water.
