Presently, NEET (National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test) is mandatory for the school final students pursuing medical courses. In a similar trend, the central government is quite keen to introduce another Entrance Examination - NEXT - for the candidates who have completed MBBS and wish to pursue higher studies.

Naturally, a pass in the NeXT or National Exit Test will be mandatory to pursue postgraduate medical courses. The central government had decided to make this mandatory last year itself. However, as there were intense nation-wide objections, it was given up.

In this scenario, the central government is still quite keen on implementing NeXT. The proposal for this is set to be presented during the current parliamentary sessions.

The duration of the graduate medical courses in India is 5-and-a-half years. Once the students complete the 4-and-a-half year course, they need work as trainee doctors. After this, they register in the Medical Council to become full-fledged doctors.

However, for the candidates who complete their medical courses outside India and coming to India, a pass in EXIT has been made mandatory. There is a stipulation that a Pass in EXIT is mandatory to register in the Indian Medical Council.

So, once the NeXT is introduced, it will mandatory to pass in NeXT to register in the Indian Medical Council.
