From the month of September in the year 2018, the government began importing sand from south-east Asian country Malaysia is known. The news that has come out now is at the Kamarajar Port in Ennore the river sand that was imported from Malaysia has been lying unused. .

In the month of March in 2019, about 60,000 tonnes of river sand was imported. This was as per the sources belonging to the Kamarajar Port. An official spoke about how this was 6th consignment to the Ennore Port Trust and how the sand was kept unused at the yard on the port premises. He explained about how the sand was of the highest quality and how usually the imported sand within a week of its arrival would be sold out. He commented about how this is the first time there has been such a long delay.

The important information is the process of marketing the sand would start only after the previous consignment that was sent to Adani Kattupalli port gets exhausted. The sand from Malaysia is being imported by a contractor appointed by PWD and this sand is now sold online by the PWD. It must be noted that per unit of imported sand measuring 4.5 tonnes, PWD has fixed a rate of Rs 10,350. This imported sand was sold very fast in the past is known.

Factors like availability of illegally mined sand plus smuggling of sand from Andhra Pradesh were responsible for the decline in the demand of river sand now. This was confirmed by Mr. Yuvaraj who is the president of TN State Sand Lorry Owner’s Federation.

It was pointed out by a senior official of PWD that their department have not been informed about any illegal mining. He assured that steps would be taken to check the illegal mining.
