For the Chennai city, major water supply comes from Veeranam Lake now

The latest news is this Veeranam Lake meets more than 35 percent of the water demands of the Chennai city. It is known that water from Metur dam was released and the important information is Veeranam Lake is now full with this water.
Mr. P. Jayaram, chief engineer of public works department expressed his thoughts and spoke about how last Wednesday the water released reached Veeranam Lake and how in the last 1 year this is the second time the lake is full to its maximum capacity.
It was pointed out by an engineer belonging to the metro water department that the total capacity of Veeranam Lake is 1465 mcft of water and at present 6 mcft or 180 million litres is being drawn from the lake each day. It is import ant to mention here that this water reaches Chennai city through pipes passing through Villupuram and Kancheepuram districts. Engineer then spoke about how the Chennai city’s water requirement is about 0.5 mcft per day and how the water available could be drawn and distributed in Chennai for the next 200 days without any issue.
It is well known that the next major source for Chennai city is the 2 desalination plants functioning in Nemmeli on the ECR and in Minjur belonging to the Tiruvallur district. The saline water from the sea gets drawn by these 2 desalination plants and the saline water gets treated. Then minerals are added and the water is distributed through the pipelines of metro water to southern parts of Chennai. It was confirmed by the metro water engineer that this meets 35% of water requirements of Chennai city. The information collected is water managers are hopeful that in this summer the Chennai city’s water needs could be managed with 70 % of water from Veeranam Lake and desalination plants. Water from the bore wells in all the 4 reservoirs is being drawn by the metro water is well known.
For the next one and half months of time, a total of 90 mld (million litres per day) of water could be drawn from the 4 reservoirs at Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram. Chennai city’s 20% water requirement would be contributed by the water from the reservoirs. Another piece of information is 5% of Chennai city’s water needs would be met by Sikkarayapuram.
