The latest news is CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited would rope in new contractor for completing the construction of 2 metro stations along the phase-1 extension project that covers north Chennai.

It is important to mention here that the phase-1 extension project runs from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar and is of 9 km. This is estimated to cost a mammoth amount of Rs 3770 crores. Various metro stations that are present between Washermanpet and Wimco Nagar are Korukkupet, Sir Theyagaraya College, Tondiarpet, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Tiruvottiyur etc.

The important information collected is the metro rail stations constructions in places like Sir Theyagaraya College and Korukkupet has been delayed. This was according to the officials belonging to CMRL. Point that must not be forgotten is two years back CMRL had given the contract worth amount of Rs 370 crores for the construction of these two above mentioned metro stations to companies like IL&FS and PJSC Kyivmetrobud which is a Ukranian based company. An official of CMRL later explained about how the companies have been facing issues regarding money and as a result of this the construction of the metro stations got slowed down.

The delay in the construction could be tolerated only for certain period of time and now the situation is such that speeding up the work has to be done. For this purpose a new company would be roped in as sub-contractor to complete the construction.

The official belonging to CMRL later threw light on how his company has been having discussions with a private firm so that the remaining work gets completed in quick time. The important point to be noted is by terminating the contract of IF & LS more time would be wasted and hence there are plans to bring in a new contractor without ending the contract of the IL&FS.

It must not be forgotten that earlier in the phase-1 project Gammon India that was given the contract for the project was terminated by CMRL for delaying the construction. CMRL then found it very difficult as it took them many months to get a new contractor. Hence the new contractor was brought in as subcontractor for completion of the work. By this way time would also not get wasted. It is now said that there are talks going on with an infrastructure company to see they would be able to construct it at faster speeds.
