Centre to standardize Driving License and Registration Certificates

Posted on: 08/Mar/2019 5:04:04 PM
From the 1st of October this year, both Driving License and Registration Certificates issued in India are going to look the same. Their colors and security aspects are going to remain the same too. These are going to contain QR Codes so that one will not be able to hide if they have any history of violations in the past. Using hand-held devices, the past records can be easily scanned and entire details about the driver can be easily obtained.

According to latest announcement by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, it is compulsory for the states to abide by the new norms. The state has proposed ides to incorporate additional features like the ‘chip’ and NFC (Near Field Communication) in the cards. These chips should have complete information about the drivers and the vehicle in the past 10 years.

NFC feature is notably seen on Metro rail and ATMs. Officials say in spite of the proposal for having chip cards and the aforementioned NFC feature, there is no clue whether the Centre will consider and implement the same.

In the new Driving License cards, there will be the driver’s declaration for organ donation and whether the driver drives ‘special’ vehicles designed to meet the demands for physically challenged.

This initiative by the Centre is to standardize the system and introduce uniformity. Across India, there are about 32,000 driving licenses being issued in the country, and about 43,000 registrations and re-registrations take place every day.

Across states, there are changes with the color and format of these driving licenses. And the license quality is very poor too. With time, printing also gets faded out, say officials.
