Plastic items ban from today: parcel meals will cost Rs. 35 more

Posted on: 01/Jan/2019 4:12:01 PM
The state government of Tamil Nadu has ordered a ban on all the use 1 time and throw articles from 1st January 2019 (today). Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Hotels Union announced the there will be a 5% discount if vessels are brought from home in order to completely cut down the use of plastic items for parcel meals. However, the public response/cooperation for this was not good.

In this situation, with the ban order of plastic items being effective from today, the hotel owners informed that as substitute items in place of plastic are to be used for the parcel meals, the price will go up and those who ordered online as well as the public who order parcel meals will have to bear the extra cost.

The President of the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association, Venkata Subbu explained in this regard:

‘There is a shortage of traders who can offer cloth bags in place of the 1-time-use plastic bags. Further a single cloth bag costs Rs. 15. Apart from this to pack the side dishes such as sambar, poriyal, koottu, etc., containers are required (multiple-use plastic containers). A single container coasts from Rs. 2.50 to Rs. 6. In order to make a complete package of parcel meals, 8 small containers and a big container to keep the cooked rice are required.

This would cost Rs. 25 and has to be recovered only from the customer who buys.

In case the buyer brings his/her own cloth bag, the cost will be lesser by Rs. 10. In case the additional containers/vessels are brought, the price will be down by Rs. 25, Further; there is a discount of Rs. 5 as well. This will be rather difficult especially during the initial periods of implementation.

Thus, the customers need to cooperate fully.’
