Work on storm water drains to begin soon in the Chennai city

The storm water project has been delayed for many years in Chennai city due to the lack of funds. The latest news that has come out now is the Corporation of Chennai would begin the works on storm water drains in the neighbourhoods along the ECR in the southern zones in the Chennai city.

An amount of Rs 270 crores would be spent on the storm water drains and the work would cover 52.5km of storm water drains in places like Palavakkam, Neelankarai and Uthandi etc. Mr. D. Karthikeyan, who is the commissioner of corporation of Chennai, spoke about how the government had given its administrative sanction for the storm water drains project. He then expressed his unhappiness regarding the funding for other places in Chennai. The Chennai Corporation has not got any funding for the areas of Kovalam basin like Sholinganallur and Perungudi along the Rajiv Gandhi Salai plus for the ecologically sensitive marshland of Pallikaranai. It is said that shortly the Chennai Corporation would float the bids. There are as many as 27 outfalls, 127 roads and 318 nodes in the project.

The superb piece of information is water stagnation would be reduced in many places like Sunrise Avenue, Maharashtra Bank on ECR, Bata showroom on ECR, Sixth Avenue Modern Layout on ECR plus in other places like Kottivakkam-Kuppam Beach Road Junction, Kuppam Breach Road, Sea Cliff, Chinandimadam and Lakshmana Perumal Nagar.

The corporation commissioner, Mr. Karthikeyan, later explained about how in the first phase of the project around 405 km of storm water drains have been built in the zones of Ambattur, Valasaravakkam and Alandur in the basins of Adyar River and Cooum River. He revealed that after getting funding from the Asian Development Bank, work on the Kosasthalaiyar River Basin would be started. The corporation of Chennai had collected date on water stagnation in many places during the northeast monsoon in the year 2015. New drains in 33 such locations have been developed by the civic body.

It is worthy to note that work on the storm water drains in Habibullah Road in T. Nagar has been completed. People would be surprised to find storm water drains in places like Tiruvottiyur High road, Purasawalkam High Road plus in other places like Sardar Patel Road, North Usman Road, Kumaraguru Avenue, Neelankarai, First Avenue Main Road in Vettuvankeni. About 1498 km of drains have been desilted by the Chennai Corporation and an amount of Rs 21 crores has been spent on this de-silting.  By utilising CSR funding as many as 30 water bodies have been restored out of 210 identified water bodies. The smart city funds are responsible for restoration of as many as 50 ponds. The capital funds belonging to the Corporation of Chennai was used in restoring as many as 10 ponds.
