Chennai water reservoirs silt deposit removal

Chennai city’s water bodies will undergo the process of removing silt deposited across the banks. This will retain the water during the rains in four of the lakes in and around the city. The project of removing the silt will be started soon said the sources of water resource department after many years of planning and ground research.
Cholavaram reservoir will be the first project to take off among the four water bodies. Poondi, Red Hills and Chembarambakkam are the other three lakes where the silt removal project will go on floors for improving the water saving management supplying to the mighty need of the city. The project plays a very crucial role in storing water acting as a primary source for Chennai city.
The project is initialized for the first phase after many decades of failed funding, planning and execution said many officials from WRD administration. Initially the project will remove silts from the Cholavaram Lake with an estimated cost of Rs 5.4 crore within the month of December, 2018. The water resource department is waiting for the government approval for starting the project in other proposed areas which will be completed before two or three years.
A road will be laid on the lake as an inspection track for the silt removing process other than the work of repairing the shutters. The project will run for three or more years as the work of removing silt deposits can be done only when the level of water are low in the lake. An increase of 2000 mcft will be gained through the desilting process said one of the officials of WRD. The water improvement and rehabilitation of the old water reservoirs will add up to the requirements of water in and around Chennai.
