Tiruvottiyur connects with Airport through Metro

Posted on: 11/Oct/2018 3:01:58 PM
According to the official announcement of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) the metro originating from Tiruvottiyur will be connected to Chennai Airport within a time span of two years. Earlier it was planned to be completed before 2019. Now there is an estimated delay in the construction of the metro Phase 1 extension project. Now CMRL conforms the completion of the project in 2020.

Tunneling works and other initial construction for the phase I extension project are already on floors said the officials of CMRL. With this extension people from Wimco Nagar and Tiruvottiyur in the north zones of Chennai can easily travel to Chennai Airport within a period of time that is obviously shorter than other modes of transport in the city.

Wimco Nagar and Washermenpet covers only a distance of 9 km whereas the Phase 1 project connecting Chennai Central to Airport covers a distance of 45 km. With the extension project the whole zone of north is connected along with the southern parts of Chennai.

With this extension a passenger can travel to and fro between Chennai Central and Tiruvottiyur within half an hour covering a distance of 18 kms. With the 2020 completion of the phase 1 extension project people can travel between Tiruvottiyur and Chennai Airport in an hour with a distance of 32 km approximately.

The official confirmation from CMRL mentions the mode of metro for the Phase 1 extension project as Underground metro system from Washermenpet to Korukkupet then followed by an elevated run to Wimco Nagar.

Fares for the proposed travel mode through metro may go up to Rs 70 with a minimum fare of Rs 10. The connecting phase along with the main metro lines will almost make the journey half the time when compared to bus and city train travel. Connecting buses are not frequent or adequate to many north Chennai localities thus making the metro connection more important in terms of travel time.
