There are many schools present in Tamil Nadu that are affiliated to CBSE or Central Board of Secondary Education. The news now is first ever inspection drive was conducted by the school education department recently to verify the infrastructure and other facilities in CBSE schools in TN. It was found that 40 percent of CBSE schools do not have the necessary approvals. These included building stability, fire safety and sanitary certificates etc.

There were violations present in as many as 400 CBSE schools out of a total of 1000 CBSE schools in TN and the chief educational officers have issued notices to these 400 schools to rectify their shortcomings. This was confirmed by the sources.

The district officials later revealed that violations were present in as many as 80 CBSE schools out of 202 schools in the Kancheepuram district. In the city of Chennai as many as 99 CBSE schools were inspected by the team and it was found that except few many schools had some form of violations.

As per the officials who have inspected the CBSE schools, all the private schools are required to get recognition from the government and till now the state government did not insist on the recognition. The officials later threw light on how most of the schools do not get the building stability certificate, building licence certificate plus fire safety and sanitary certificates etc that are mandatory for getting recognition. The inspection drive was started in the month of March and it went on till August 2018. One important point is the inspection team had officials belonging to fire and rescue service, health and school education department.

Chief educational officer later spoke about how a questionnaire with 90 questions covering all the aspects of school like building, transport etc were given by the inspection teams. Time was provided to the schools for filling up the questionnaire. It must be taken into account that the inspection teams looked for building plan approval, structural stability certificate, public building license plus no objection certificate from fire and rescue services department. Sanitary certificate from the health department was also sought by the inspection teams. The presence of qualified teachers in the schools as per the NCTE or national council for teacher education norms was also one important area that was examined by the team.

The chief educational officer later spoke about how most CBSE schools did not have no -objection certificate from fire and rescue services and sanitary certificate from the health department. These are essential requirements for recognised private school in TN. Some schools that had poor infrastructures were given notices by chief educational officers for closure. As many as 10 schools in the Chennai district were given closure notices as these schools lacked basic infrastructure facilities like classrooms, playgrounds, compound wall etc.
