What to expect for recreation in Chennai?

The main recreation areas of Chennai city are zoo, beaches and wildlife parks. The total length of coast areas in Chennai city counts to 19 km. Of this, the Marina stretches out for 6 km covering deltas of Cooum and Adyar region. This holds the pride of being the second largest beach in the world. Towards the south, there is Elliot’s Beach. And the other is Covelong beach which is seen along Coromandel coast.

Towards south of the city at about 40km, there is Madras Crocodile Bank Trust which is a reptile zoo. This covers a total land area of 8.5 acres. According to reports of 2007, it says there use to be 4,50,000 visitors. This is among the largest such zoos in this kind with a lot of crocodiles and alligators.
The Arignar Anna Zoological Park is touted to be among the most widespread zoological parks in the entire world. Annually, about 20 lakh visitors step in to take a trip of the birds, animals and trees.
Back in 1995, the Guindy National Park got recognized by the Central Zoo Authority of India.
Chennai is notably among the very few cities that has national parks – the national park in Guindy falls within its city limits. On the whole, about 4.5 percent of the total area in Chennai city is green covered. So, Chennai residents are also excited about birding.

The Tholkappia Poonga is the largest of all these with a total area of 358 acres. The Adyar estuary had developed this fragile ecosystem. There is Semmozhi Poonga falling under the control of horticulture. This is a botanical garden spread over 20 acre land area and having its location in the downtown.
Coming on to fun time for kids, there are several theme parks like the MGM Dizzee World and Queens Land.
When we talk about the recreations in Chennai, we cannot miss out on the Madras Boat Club that ages beyond 140 years. This is notably the second oldest among others in the Indian rowing club. The Gymkhana Club encompasses 18 golf courses.
