Chennai green cover reducing every year

A recent survey conducted by Care Earth trust concludes the fact of reducing green cover in Chennai with only 0.46sqm of open space. Also the availability of trees calculated with population of the city comes around just one tree for every 33 people.

The results of the survey were brought to the notice of Chennai Corporation to turn the heads of the authorities towards the degrading green zones inside the metropolitan.

Care Earth trust survey says the city’s green cover is being reduced by 2 percent every year owing to the residential building constructions and commercial layouts of big multinational corporations. The final reports will be submitted within a week said the sources of the trust.

Environmental experts and enthusiasts are pointing towards poor planning of the city’s infrastructure and unscientific methods of planting trees as the main reasons for the reduction of the green cover. S.Balaji, the head of Care Earth trust reported the core operation of the survey on 450 streets coming within the Chennai Corporation concluding the highlight of one tree for every 33 people.

The survey said the areas of Adyar, Teynampet and Anna Nagar are the zones with maximum green vegetation while the areas of Perungudi, Manali and Tondairpet are marked as lowest green cover zones of the entire city. After the submission of final report of the survey the trust expects the civic body to bring some action to increase the green cover of the city.
