  • Lentils (Bengal gram, green gram, etc) can be boiled quicker when they cooked in rainwater. It will also be tastier.

  • Keep lemons in water for an hour each day. They will not wither and will remain ok for a longer while.

  • Always use wooden ladles to mix the pickles.

  • After washing the vessels used for storing curd/buttermilk, keep them in sunlight for some time. The unpleasant smell will go away.

  • To remove the bad smell from the flasks, wash them with water after adding a small quantity of vinegar.

  • To prevent the curry leaves from going dry, keep them covered under an Aluminium lid or vessel.

  • Drying the small onions in the sun for some time will keep it in condition for a month also, it will prevent sprouting.

  • Keep ginger in damp sand.

  • Keeping raw bananas in water will keep them fresh for more than a week.

  • Cutting off the head and tail part of okra (lady’s finger or vendaikkai) will keep it in good condition for a day more.

  • To keep groundnut oil from rotting/souring, keep a small quantity of tamarind in the oil container.

  • Spray a few droplets of perfume on the lit bulbs/ tube light/LED lamps. The place will be filled with pleasant smell.

  • While stitching nylon clothes, it would be rather difficult to stitch using the needle – for this. dip the needle in a soap bar and then use – the problem will be solved.

  • In order to take out the maximum paste from the toothpaste, keep it under hot water for some time and then squeeze.

  • Keep the blood-stained clothes for some time in cold water after dissolving some salt in it. Wash after some time. The blood stain would be gone.

  • Add a few drops of castor oil in jar where ‘maavadu’ pickle is kept. Insects won’t enter and the pickle will last longer.

  • In order to wash white clothes for a sparkling white, add a few pinches of table salt in the water before and then soak and wash. The clothes will be ultra-white after wash.

  • Rubbing the mirror with some tea leaves/powder will remove all the dirt and it will glitter.

  • Do not fry/cook raw coriander/curry leaves – they will retain all the nutrients only when used raw.

  • Do not use excess oil while making curries of roots like potato, yam, etc. Excess oil will make them difficult to digest.
