A Government order has been passed by the Higher Education Department to admit 20 percent more students in government arts and science colleges from this academic year. Sunil Paliwal, the Higher Education Secretary has signed the order stating the increase of student admissions.

In the departments of science streams, the colleges with laboratory could consider admitting 20 percent additional students. The government order came overnight that was actually not expected by the college authorities this academic year. A meeting was held on June 11 ordering the universities not to include excess students in the admission and then followed by the new order of 20% intake.

Many college authorities mentioned about the unprofessional communication between the governmental orders and the execution. Many institutions were ordered not to admit additional intake of students but were orally instructed to admit students who were recommended by the political influences.

Government college authorities states their situation of meagre funds for facilitating the students and the education and their limitations in admitting additional students. Teachers association points out the miscommunication between the government and the colleges and to sort out the problem with progressive changes such as adding more courses, offering more funds and increasing the facilities of education in colleges.

Admitting more number of students can actually reduce the quality of education and the government should take necessary steps to offer education for growing masses along the side improving the pathetic conditions of the government arts and science colleges.
