TANGEDCO has decided to increase the charges for new selectivity connections. This is likely to be effective immediately after the approval is received from the Electricity regulation commission.

There are 3 crores electricity connections throughout Tamil Nadu. Out of this, 2.2 crores are domestic connections, 11 lakhs are connections for hut-dwellers, and 21 Lakhs agricultural connections and also 30 Lakhs commercial establishment connections.

In this situation, TANGEDCO has decided to increase the charges for electricity connection for the houses, industries, and the commercial establishments.

An official from TANGEDCO explained in this regard that the rates for electricity consumption charges are being periodically revised for homes, industries, and the commercial establishments. However, the charges for getting an electricity connection have not been revised. The last time this was revised in the year 1999. Now, TANGEDCO has decided to increase this after a gap of 20 years.

Accordingly, presently, in the Chennai Metro City areas, a charge of Rs. 1600 is being collected for a single phase connection. This will be increased to Rs. 9000 and for 3-phase connection, it is being revised from Rs. 5050 to Rs. 27660.

In suburban areas, single phase connection charges are being revised from Rs. 1600 to Rs. 12000 and the 3 Phase connection, revised from Rs. 5050 to Rs. 12060. These rates for suburban Chennai will be applicable to other districts as well.

Similarly, the connection charges for industries and commercial establishments are also being revised. Further, to restore the disconnected electricity connection, change of names, and the penalty for bounced cheques issued for payment ar also being increased.

A petition has been submitted to approve this proposal has been submitted to The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Authority. This will be scrutinized and the final decision will be given.

Once approval is received the revisions in the above charges will come into effect.
