Chennai rains may pay a visit next week

Rains generally remain scanty over the Southern Peninsular India, including Tamil Nadu during the months of January and February. March too follows similar footprints with slight improvement.

The state gets most of its rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon with some showers also occurring during the pre-Monsoon season. Although the pre-Monsoon season that stretches from March to May has already begun, the state and its adjoining regions are still hoping to get some rains.

As per Skymet Weather, though the first week of the month went dry, the second week of March would end the wait for some rains that are sure to bring some respite from the ongoing warm and humid weather.

Skymet Weather reiterates that a low-pressure area lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka Coast, south of coastal Tamil Nadu. This system is likely to move in a westerly direction towards coastal Tamil Nadu. Moreover, the trough of the low-pressure area is also extending from this system towards Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, scattered light rains are also expected to show up in parts of the state around March 12. However, these rains would mainly remain confined to the southern region of the state, covering stations like Pamban, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Shivmoga, and Nagapattinam.

These rain and thundershowers would further result in the drop in the day and night temperatures initially in the next 24 hours, after which the day temperatures would drop offering a relief from the prevailing humid weather conditions.

The intensity of the rain and thundershowers is thereafter expected to increase by March 13 wherein these rounds of rain would cover more parts of the state. Chennai might also stand a chance to register some light spells during this time.

As per Skymet Weather, on and off rain and thundershowers are likely to continue for a week. Hence, Tamil Nadu can brace for a rainy week ahead.
