The most auspicious time to celebrate Pongal

Tamil Nadu States most important festival of Pongal falls on 14th January, Sunday on the Tamil calendar month of Thai in the Tamil year Hevilambi.

The most auspicious time for celebrating Pongal on this festival day is between 6.00 AM to 7.00 AM in sunlight or between 11.00 AM and 12.00 Noon during the time Guru Oorai.

It is also to be noted that the period between 10.00 AM and 11.00 AM  and between 12.00 Noon and 1.30 PM are not good. So, it is better to conduct pooja and prayers in other times except for these 2 periods.

The other bad time durations:
  • Yamagandam 12.59 Noon to 1.30 PM
  • Rahu Kalam 4.30 PM to 6.00 PM
The birth of the Tamil calendar month Thai

The month of Thai is born at 5.09 PM on Sunday, 14th November. It is left to individual preferences whether to celebrate Pongal after the birth of Thai as mentioned here. However, it is not advisable to celebrate Pongal just before the sunset.
