A recent study states that children who tend to spend more time on TV are likely to say no to fruits and veggies. The research conducted by the Loughborough University studied 527 children aging between 11 and 12 and have arrived at this conclusion.

About 2-3rd of the youngsters who took up the questionnaire were found to suffer detrimental health troubles, states a press release from the university. One-third of the participants confessed that they took part in all the 3 sessions of the questionnaire that included
  • Low fruit and vegetable intake
  • High fat snack intake
  • More screen time
This is not the very first study to analyze the relation between poor eating habit and TV viewing traits. There are already a number of such studies that analyze the relation and have discovered harmful effects of letting children watch TV in their own bedroom. It can lead to obesity, claim a lot of studies.

Experts say advertisements on junk foods and snacks tempt children and lead them to unhealthy diet choice and make them consume more calories.

One of the study researchers from the BMC Public Health told that the screen time spent by children and their unhealthy eating habits are largely linked with each other. Hence, it is absolutely logical to expect improvement in eating behavior of children by cutting down the screen time they spend.

Practices such as munching on snacks while watching TV or using gadgets has detrimental effects on their health aspects.

The study was funded by the British Heart Foundation. It hired7 students from 4 secondary schools in East Midlands. They were enquired about their eating habits, whom with would they watch TV and snacking habits. According to the study results, when parents consume healthier foods, and reduce their TV watching time, children tend to eat better.

All that is needed is a simple change like avoiding unhealthy snacks and promote healthy ones, say psychologists. The psychologist also insists that one can improve their diet by switching off the TV during mealtime and sped time as a family rather.
