Solar panels at Chennai Metro soon

As a move to reduce power consumption and make the most of non-conventional energy sources, the Chennai Metro Rail has planned to set up solar street lights in select stations shortly.
As per the Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials, solar street lights of 50W with lithium ion battery backup are to be set up in stations including Koyambedu, Alandur, and Arumbakkam. The total estimate of the project is Rs 10 lakh.
Call for tenders:
A CMRL official said they have announced a call for tenders to set up 25 such solar street lights. In 2 months, the works will start. Based on the progress of works in these stations, similar solar street lights are to be set up at other stations as well.
Such solar panels are already set up in depot and parking areas of administrative office of CMRL in Koyambedu. The production capacity here is 1MW and 125KW respectively. The Koyambedu depot of CMRL is spread across 26 hectares and includes on-campus workshops, washing plants for trains, and Operation Control Centre from where trains are being controlled.
Apart from this, spaces are allotted in station rooftops at Koyambedu and St. Thomas Mount, and Little Mount and Chennai Airport. The rooftop area is estimated to be 40,000 sq.m. These works may take up to 1 year to get over, said an official from CMRL.
