The Transport Department has granted the clearance to register the vehicles fitted with BS-3 pollution control engines sold until 31st March.

This has provided great relief to both the traders and the buyers. Thus, the state government of Tamil Nadu has allowed the registration of vehicles fitted with BS-3 engines sold before 1st April, The Commissioner of the Transport Department has sent a circular of this order to all the RTOs (Regional Transport Offices) regarding this.

The order detailed that due to the problems encountered in the online registration of vehicles, the uploading of Form 30 and paying taxes were greatly affected.

As per the demands of the manufacturers and traders, if the sales format and insurance details are available for the vehicles with BS-3 engines sold until 31st March is available, these can be registered as a separate category.

A point to be noted is that these vehicles have to be registered in the normal usual process and not online. In order to facilitate auditing, a separate register has to be maintained for these vehicles.

An RTO officer explained that it is a fact that even vehicles unfit for operation on roads are still being taken on the road. These vehicles can cause far higher pollution than the BS-3 vehicles. So, the unfit vehicles have to banned first.

Though there are difficulties in registering BS-3 vehicles, many owners in rural areas have started using them even before registration. As the laws are more stringently in urban areas, it is impossible to take a vehicle out without the registration. This acutely affected the traders and buyers in major cities.
