A study published in the journal BMJ says that eating foods that are rich in flavonoids may help prevent weight gain. These foods are those such as apples, pears, berries and radishes. The study was conducted by researchers at Harvard University and the University of East Anglia (UEA).

The researchers studied the connection between weight change and the corresponding dietary intake of seven flavonoid sub classes. They studied 124,086 people over 24 years.

Speaking about this, the researchers said, We found that an increased consumption of most flavonoids were associated with weight maintenance, and even a modest weight loss. The results were found to be consistent across men and women, and different ages.

Flavonoids have been linked to weight loss, especially those found in green tea.

The respondents of the study reported their weight, lifestyle habits and recently diagnosed diseases. They did so through questionnaires that were given to them every two years. The entire exercise took place between 1986 and 2011. They also reported their diet every four years.

The findings of the study showed that people had more of a chance at weight loss when they consumed more flavonoid rich foods. Losing or preventing even small amounts of weight can reduce risk of diabetes, cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The results can provide guidance on which fruits and vegetables to choose for preventing weight gain, said the researchers.
