As a move to bring better transparency and make the important documents available with ease, nearly 126 e-seva centres are to be set up in the city.

There are seventy such e-seva centres commissioned and functioning by the Chennai Corporation and Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation. The functioning began on Monday will offer services for providing Aadhar cards, patta, nativity certificate, community or birth certificate, income certificate, etc.

According to Chennai Corporation official sources, they have signed an agreement with TACTV for offering free services pertaining to Chennai Corporation. As per this, services like providing property tax payment, company tax, professional tax, tax assessment application, trade license, birth certificate, etc will be provided for free.

However, for services related to passport, charges will be applicable, said sources from the Revenue Department and Social Welfare Department. For example, a charge of Rs 50 is applicable for obtaining community certificate from the Revenue department. Officials working here at the e-seva centres will scan all original certificates provided and instantly upload them in their database. Following this, the revenue officials will verity the scanned documents and provide the certificate. Finally, applications can be obtained at the e-seva centres too.

Ward-level officials at the Corporation claim that enough training by TACTV is not provided to personnel working at these e-seva centres. They are unaware of proper approach with residents. They get Rs 8,000 as salary. They are good at operating computers. They lack in proper training for communicating with desperate residents who seek for civic services.
