Candidates take NET exam, baffled by questions

Posted on: 03/Jan/2016 12:51:27 PM
The National Eligibility Test (NET) exam was a tough one for many who attended it. Many candidates were baffled by the questions.

When they walked out of the exam centres, many said, One question in Section C of the paper asked the candidates to mark the original/real name of a Hindi actress, whom I have never heard of. Though it might fair to an extent to ask such question a journalist & visual communication candidate, candidates from the South will have no clue of Hindi film actresses... This is not the first time, such a question was asked. When I took up the exam on 2012, a similar question asking the name of a Hindi serial actress who acted during the 1990s was asked. It would be better if the questions were based on actors popular across the country.’

Some candidates complained about the length and confusion of the questions. A college principal said, The questions seem to be not aimed to test the knowledge of the candidates, but to catch them on the wrong foot. The questions were very much above the standards by any stretch of the imagination considering the vast majority of candidates hail from rural areas... The NET exam, conducted by University Grants Commission, is only a qualifying test and it does not automatically entail appointment as Assistant Professor. Candidates who clear NET, will be subjected to an intense personal interview when they apply for any post in the Government or aided college or University. The exam, which was meant to fix a bar for eligibility to become a lecturer, has virtually created an insurmountable barrier, he said.

Some of the candidates complained that several questions were on specialised topics. Several questions were focused on specialised topics which can be answered only by research scholars in the field... Questions were beyond the scope of preparation. For instance, there was a question on Negandhi Estafan. Only researchers who had read this while reviewing literature as a part of their Ph.D can answer this, they said.
