Research shows that phones can be hacked easily

According to new research, hackers are able to transmit radio commands to smartphones remotely and discreetly. This is possible in both Android and iPhones in which Google Now and Siri are enabled. The research was conducted by ANSSI which is a French security company.

A hacker will be able to discreetly transmit signals to the phones from 5 metres or 16 feet away. They are also able to access the personal assistant (Google Now or Siri) without speaking out loud. All the hacker needs is a microphone enabled headphone. The process allows the hacker to send texts, eavesdrop, make calls, send spam messages on email and social media and also redirect the browser to a malware site. The headphone`s cord is used as an antenna. The wire can convert electromagnetic waves into electrical signals. The researchers say, The possibility of inducing parasitic signals on the audio front-end of voice-command-capable devices could raise critical security impacts.’

However, the researchers also say that this hacking process has limitations. The hack can be conducted only when the user has on the microphone enabled headphones and is not on lock screen. Many Android phones cannot access the personal assistant on lock screens. The new iPhone 6s verifies the user`s own voice. Keeping these in mind, users can stay relaxed.
