When would the Census enumerator come to our place?"

The Chennai Corporation`s helpline (1913) are getting busy signals. Is everyone enquired the same thing? Yes! The nonstop calls have forced the corporation to open an exclusive wing to receive Census-related calls, separate from the usual civic complaints the helpline receives.

Referring the list of officials in charge of Census operations across the city, the helpline staff notes down the complaints and pass it on to the person concerned. "Some callers want to know the exact time when the enumerator would visit them, some others show anxiety that they may be left out of the exercise. They know that they have to be counted to be eligible for the unique identity card (UID) to be issued by the central government.

S Gopalakrishnan, director, Census operations, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, said residents need not be worried. "If the enumeration is done in the neighbourhood, but your house was left out, call up the helpline and give your name and contact number, and an enumerator would soon visit you," he said.
