Colossal Birds during this Migratory Season – Pulicat Lake
Pulicat Lake, the second largest brackish water lake in India along the Coromandel Coast, just 60 kilometers away from Chennai on the northern periphery attracts an outsized count of migratory birds in this season.
Nearly
50,000 birds including northern pintail, godwit, and flamingos; in addition to
sandpipers, red and green shanks have been sighted, say experts and
naturalists.
Bird’s
migration from one place to another is majorly based on the tidal flow of the
lake and food accessibility, stated by the T.Murugavel, Environment Monitoring
& Action Initiating (EMAI) division. He also added that, few ideal places
like Annamalaicheri, Arambakkam and SHAR will be stuffed with guest birds.
The
anthropogenic coerces have been obnoxious the lake. A Kudri, fresh water tank
present just opposite to it, is an imperative ecosystem which draws several
bird species, he said.
Many
resident birds like Streaked weaver, coot and purple moorhen will be breeding
in Pulicat Lake. , Mr.Murugavel demands for the declaration of ‘No-Development-Zone’
for at least 10km from the fringes of the lake and prevention of the
acquisition of land for real estate purpose.
The
number of birds’ has been reduced from 100 species to 80 species during this
migration season, due to increased human intervention, Mr.Murugavel added.
