Rise veggie prices prove too much for mess owners

Canteens around Chennai are facing major problems in the wake of soaring vegetable prices. With the price of basic commodities such as ginger, tomato and onions going up incredibly, canteen and mess owners are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

Says a mess owner from Mambalam, ‘I have been in the catering business for more than 25 years. This is the first time I am witnessing such unbelievable rates. One full meal costs Rs. 50 at (my) mess. If I increase the price, I will lose customers. Not a single day passes without onions and tomatoes being used in our menus. We buy around 20 kg each of tomatoes and onions daily. Today tomatoes are selling at more than Rs. 50 a kilo. Ginger rates are even worse.’
