Cyclone moves away from Chennai

Posted on: 15/May/2013 11:41:18 AM
Hopes that were pinned on the Cyclone Mahasen have been dashed as the cyclone moved away from Chennai. The Cyclone was 600 kms away from Chennai in the Bay of Bengal and was expected to come closer, giving the city much needed rain and respite from the summer heat. However, it moved away and is now around 450 kms off thecoast of Vishakapatnam.

But the cyclone did give the city light drizzles of rain, cloudy skies and lower temperatures. ‘Meenambakkam on Tuesday recorded 36.8C, which is unusually low for the
area. The suburb had recorded a lower temperature than Nungambakkam on
Monday as well, with 35C’, said Y.E.A. Raj, Director at the Chennai Meteorological Department.

‘Temperature is likely to increase by a degree on Wednesday, touching 38C… The cyclone would no longer affect the city. It has now drifted northeast and the city temperature will soar. The cloud cover and the sea breeze were keeping the temperature low for the past two days’, he said.
