Sravana Viradham is observing penance on the day of Tamil Hindu star Sravanam and this is considered the most ideal for the devotees of Lord Mahavishnu. This is because the star ‘Sravanam’ (known also as `Thiruvonam`) is the most suited to Lord Mahavishnu. The prime God (‘Adhidevathai) for the star Sravanam is Lord Mahavishnu. The day of Dwadasi (the 12th days during the growing/diminishing phase of the moon) is also considered ideal for the Lord Mahavishnu.

So, when the star ‘Sravanam’ falls on the day of Dwadasi, it gains excellent significance. By observing penance and fasting on this sacred day and praying Lord Mahavishnu, the classics explain that the devotees would get rid of their sins and ‘punyam’.

Thus, it is extremely advisable to pry Lord Vishnu on the day of Dwadasi (the next day after Ekadasi)  and the day of the star ‘Sravanam’ or ‘Thiruvonam’. Generally, observing penance on the day of Ekadasi and ‘paranam’ has to be performed on the next day of Dwadasi, there is no need to observe ‘upavasam’ or fasting on this day.

However, on the more sacred day of Sravana Dwadasi, it is advisable o observe penance/upavasam. With this, the sins committed in one’s life will get removed and the children will grow with better prosperity in life!
