A very steep reduction in the groundwater

Posted on: 10/Jan/2019 11:50:09 AM
As the northeast monsoon failed to bring the required rainfall, the groundwater level has gone down very steeply in 19 districts. Through the Department of the Land and Land-surface Statistics Department functioning under the Public Works Department, the groundwater level in all the districts except Chennai district is regularly being monitored.

Wells have been drilled in several places for this purpose. The groundwater level and the capacity is calculated and kept as a monthly record.

As per this statistics for the month of December, the groundwater level has gone down by 1 metre to 3 metres in the districts of Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Thiruvarur, Trichy, and Karur, The statistics for the districts of Perambalur, Aryalur, Salem, Namakkal, Nilgiri, Dindigul, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari is also to the same extent.

As the groundwater will be further drawn for drinking and irrigation purposes, it is expected that the groundwater is likely to go down even further!
