ILS in Chennai airport runaways not functioning

Posted on: 02/Mar/2013 11:30:35 AM
The Airports Authority of India has issued  `Notice to Airmen"  following that the Instrument Landing System ( ILS) fixed on the two runways at the Chennai airport has not been functioning from the last Monday. In order to give caution the AAI made it mandatory that the pilots should follow `non-precision` approach.

ILS provides precision guidance to the pilots approaching and landing on runways.

It has been said that the rectification of the major fault in the ILS may take three to four months minimum and till then the pilots have been asked to follow non-precision while landing.

Some pilots say the landing of planes would not be a problem to them if the visibility is normal and it would be difficult if conditions were poor which might delay the arrival of planes. According to the pilots, in place like Chennai airport, the problem would be arrival of aircraft will be delayed, hence the landings have to be sequenced.
