Soon the devotees visiting 47 major temples in the state of Tamil Nadu would be surprised. The reason for that is the food safety and standards authority of India certification would be found on the prasadham of these temples. These temples are run by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. This was confirmed by an official on Friday, 13th July 2018.

It is well known that the prasadham is a religious offering and is consumed by the devotees after praying god in the temples. It must not be forgotten that some time back the popular Sri Palani Murugan temple attracted the attention of many due to the food safety tag for the ‘Panchamirtham’ prasadham. The main purpose of this tag is to ensure quality and standardization. Panchamirtham is a mixture of honey, ghee, banana, dates sugar etc is known.

The official expressed his thoughts about the certification and spoke about how the Palani temple was the pilot project and how process of getting FSSAI certification was initiated in 46 popular temples in Tamil Nadu also. FSSAI license number plus price, weight and best before date details are available on the Palani Murugan temple panchamirtham prasadham now.

The official also revealed that there were few incidents of devotees falling sick after consuming the prasadham offered in some private temples and this had caught the attention. Hence the decision to go for the certification was made. It is important to mention that in the month of April, two women died and 30 fell sick after consuming prasadham offered by a private temple at Mettupalayam.
