The state of Tamil Nadu is now ranked second in contributing to e-waste

Discarded electrical or electronic devices are considered as e-waste or electronic waste. Those used electronics that are destined could be reused or resold or recycled are also regarded as e-wastes.
The sensational piece of news now is the state of Tamil Nadu is now second in contributing to this e-waste. It is now clear that Tamil Nadu contributes as much as 13 % of total e-waste of India. The state of Maharashtra contributes 19.8 % and is ranked first in this e-waste contribution.
Tuesday, 5th of June 2018 was World Environment Day or WED and ahead on this WED a report released stated that Tamil Nadu recycles as much as 52,427 tonnes per annum or TPA of e-wastes and the state of Maharashtra recycles only about 47,810 tonnes per annum.
According to a recent study by Assocham-NEC, besides China, USA, Japan and Germany, India is among top 5 nations in e-waste generation and Tamil Nadu is second in contributing to e-wastes.
At the third place is the state of UP that contributes 10.1 %, state of West Bengal contributes 9.8 % and is followed by the state of Karnataka that contributes 8.9 % towards e-wastes.
It is important to note that discarded computers, circuit boards, mobile phones and chargers, motherboards, CRT, CDs, LCDs, refrigerators, air-conditioners and headphones etc are regarded as e-wastes.
By the year 2021, the e-wastes produced all over the world is expected to be around 522 lakh tonnes and that is around 6.8 kg per individual. In the year 2018, the e-waste generated was 447 lakh tonnes.
According to a study, only 20 % of total e-waste produced is collected properly and recycled but remaining 80 % is undocumented. During recycling process chemicals are emitted and these chemicals cause harmful effects on us when we get exposed to it for longer duration of time. This was also explained in the study. These toxic chemicals could cause severe damage to kidneys, liver and brain development plus it could lead to respiratory issues, skin issues, cancers, cardiac problems etc.
Few details about World Environment Day or WED - Every year on 5th of June World Environment Day or WED would be held to create awareness and action for protecting our environment. In the year 1972, WED was first established by the UN General Assembly and it was in June in the year 1974 this WED was first held. The theme for 2018 is ‘Beat plastic pollution’.
