How to check whether the gold jewellery bought is genuine or imitation?

The auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya is approaching. Most people have a strong belief in the tradition that buying gold on this auspicious day will bring prosperity for the family in future. It is another matter that there is a debate on this. However, Indian Standards Institute comes up with the information, exploiting this tradition, that some unauthorized shops are selling low quality jewellery items.
How to identify the authorized shops and how to check the jewellery with Hallmark? What is Hallmark and what is its objective?
All people are aware of the term Hallmark referring to the jewellery. This is the authority confirming the purity of the gold being branded.
Hallmark was introduced in the year 2000. Hallmark provides the protection or the public from buying fake jewellery and getting cheated.
4 brands to be noted by the gold buyer
Hallmark comprises of 4 different brands, BIS stamp. Artistry brand, Assaying, and hallmark, the seller’s brand are the4 brands,
In case any jewellery item carries all the above 4 brands, it is a Hallmark jewellery item.
Please note that any shop claiming to sell Hallmark Branded jewellery should carry the above 4 brands in every jewellery item.Even if 1 out of the 4 is missing, it cannot be called a Hallmark jewellery. This applies to all jewellery items whether big or small – like rings, bangles, or chains.
All BIS approved shops have a microscope to facilitate confirming the 4 brands on the jewellery item.
An important thing note here is that Hallmark is not an enforced or mandatory for the jewellery items. It is given to those sellers or jewellery shop owners who apply and ask for it.
In this scenario, the public buying jewellery items only with Hallmark confirms the quality and the purity of gold.
The jewelers visit the assaying centre and pay only Rs. 18 to get the Hallmark irrespective of the weight. So, the statement that Hallmark jewelleries are costlier is false.
Thus, only 2 issues are important when going for pure gold:
- Visit only the approved shops
- Check the jewellery item for Hallmark.
