Traffic congestion in Chromepet and its nearby areas are more these days. It must be noted that there has been a delay for above nine years now in constructing a subway in Chromepet in Chennai and this has resulted in huge traffic here leading to many issues. People who cross the railway tracks face huge risk of their lives here as they get run over by the trains.

It must not be forgotten that in the year 2009, the state highways department announced that a subway joining east Chromepet with GST Road would be built near Radha Nagar. This is in association with the Southern Railway.

An amount of Rs 14 crores was released in this regard of building a subway so that it would be highly beneficial to college students, office goers belonging to Radha Nagar, Nemilichery, Bharathipuram etc.

Railways received the amount of Rs 4 crores and started their work of constructing the subway. In order to help highways plus state public works department to go with their jobs, concrete box culverts were made. It is now revealed that there has not been any progress in this.

At the railway gate connecting the locals with GST the commuters are made to wait for long periods of time now. Traffic congestion is heavy here in the peak hours of time and as a result this stretch gets clogged. In this scenario few people who lack patience find other ways like sneaking through the closed railway gate etc.

Land acquisition problems plus other government based agencies associated with construction were not in a position to hand over the required land. Expansion plans are cited as the reasons for this. This was confirmed by a senior official belonging to state highways department.

This official also spoke about how vehicle subway could not be built with the available land and how a narrow pedestrian subway only could be set up. He later threw light on how the residents here are totally against setting up of pedestrian subway as the purpose would not be solved.  At the level crossing opposite of the popular Vaishnava College a subway has been planned now.
