The conversion of short distance buses to long distances buses in Chennai is creating issues

Posted on: 14/Apr/2018 11:03:19 AM
Recently there was hike in the bus ticket prices and that caused many problems for the people who travelled by buses. Many protests took place and the rates were brought down a little. It is known that presently many passengers are using trains or other modes of transport to reach their places of destinations. MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation wants more people to use MTC buses as their modes of transport and have converted many short distance buses to long distance buses.

The latest news that has come out now is this move of converting short distance buses to long distance buses have angered many passengers as the frequency of buses got declined.

This has been observed mainly in south Chennai areas like Siruseri, Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur etc. The changed number buses are on the rise also in other places such as Tambaram, Poonamallee, Kannathur etc. It is important to mention here that the bus route 70S operating between places like Koyambedu and Kannagi Nagar has been re-numbered. The problem is the people now have to take two buses to reach their destinations.

One regular commuter named Pachayamma spoke her heart out regarding this and said MTC officials should have informed about the change before itself and that would have avoided many issues to the commuters. She also spoke about how people used to wait for long hours to get the buses that have been re-numbered.

It must be noted that T. Nagar to Thuraipakkam bus route 19C, Tambaram to Siruseri 51k, Perumbur to Minjur 64P, Saidapet to Kelambakkam 19B, Koyambedu to Ottiyambakkam 51L have been extended and re-numbered.  People travelling in short route buses find it very difficult now as no alternative arrangement has been made.

Diverted buses have very low patronage and this was cited as the reason by an official belonging to MTC. He also highlighted that more buses would be available in the coming months and arrangements are going on.

From those places having no alternative transport options, more buses would be plying and this has been confirmed now. The main objective of this was to increase the funds of MTC that is now having less cash than before.
