It is well known that schools play huge roles in the children’s life and many kids go to various schools in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is important that these schools must be safe for these students and don’t cause harm. To ensure safety for the students from building violation as well as from fire risk what Madras High Court has done is tremendous now.

Madras High Court has now directed the school education department so that inspection of every government, government aided and private school present in the state of TN for compliance of National Building Code would be done.

In the year 2004 a huge fire disaster took place in a school in Kumbakonam and many students lost their lives is known. It is now revealed that the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose issued interim directions and this is in view of Supreme Court directive issued after the school fire accident in Kumbakonam in 2004.

By 9th of April 2018, the school education department must form district level committees and inspections must be done and report must be filed. This is as per the directions passed in PIL that was moved by A. Narayanan. It is worthy to mention that after the fire tragedy in the school a PIL was filed in the court and on 13th April 2009 court gave many directions to all states and Union Territories for the safety of the school kids.

Fire and life safety standards plus code of practices were mentioned for the educational institutions by the apex court.  In the state of TN the National Building Code of India, 2005 plus the orders of SC are not implemented and they are present just on the paper only.

According to Mr Narayanan many schools run by private as well as government are running in dangerous conditions. He also highlighted the poor conditions such as ventilation, lack of fire safety plus no proper lightings existing in many schools present in congested places.

Mr Narayanan further spoke about how many schools do not have recognition from the school education department plus no affiliation from the CBSE.
