The news that Tamil Nadu medical council or TNMC is in the process of introducing minimum standards for the hospital, clinics, nursing homes in the state of TN has been the talk of the town.

It is now revealed that the state of TN is waiting for Clinical Establishment Act and this would make licensing of all hospitals, clinics plus others like nursing homes, labs compulsory.

Till now the Tamil Nadu medical council has been playing a restricted role and has initiated action against individual doctors. Soon this would change and the council would be involved in setting up of a committee to frame guidelines. By this not only individual doctors but also entire hospital could face action.

Compilation of a report regarding minimum standards for clinics, nursing homes and hospitals would begin soon. Dr. Senthil president of TNMC spoke about how meeting these standards would be compulsory for the clinics, hospitals and nursing homes etc.

He also added that any complaint received by them against these clinics, hospitals etc not meeting the required standards would be seriously dealt. To run a hospital in the state of Tamil Nadu it is not necessary to get a certificate from accreditation agencies etc and this was confirmed by Dr. Senthil. This is the present situation.

It is worthy to note that this is the first time medical council would be coming out with the own set of guidelines. This president of TNMC threw light on the fact that the plan to have minimum set of standards has been there for a decade and was brought out in the open in the year 2014 in the Madras High Court.

Dr. Senthil spoke about how a man lodged a complaint against a private hospital regarding the death of his father as that hospital was responsible for the death. The medical council could not do much in this regard and it set aside the complaint as it did not have power to act against the hospital.

Later Madras High Court in association with Medical Council of India or MCI ordered the state council to frame guidelines so that the council would have power to act against the hospital.
