Fishermen go into the sea for their living is known. During the times of severe cyclones these fishermen find it tough to get information about the cyclones etc. It is now said that the home ministry would soon be designing a communication system for the benefit of these fishermen and these fishermen would be able to receive information during the cyclones.

VHF sets would be fixed in their boats and this would provide the much needed information to the fishermen during cyclones.

It must not be forgotten that on the 29th of November 2017 when cyclone which began from Kanyakumari cut across the Arabian Sea Indian coast guard did remarkable work in saving more than 850 fishermen who were stranded plus they also assisted thousands of other fishermen.

After the cyclone caused many problems a meeting between the officials of home ministry, fisheries ministry plus officials from animal husbandry department took place. In this meeting need for relaying the information to the fisherman was spoken. This was confirmed by Indian Coast Guard inspector general, Mr Paramesh.

Mr Paramesh highlighted the importance of having VHF sets fixed to the boats. He spoke about how the information about an emergency could be sent to the boat that is near to the shore and then from this boat information to other boats could be sent.

He further threw light on how merchant ship did superb job of saving 29 stranded fishermen during the time of Ockhi cyclone. It is now clear that the information through International Safety NET was passed on to all merchant ships during this cyclone.

Mr. Rajendra Singh, who is Indian Coast Guard director general, spoke about the equipment that was issued to as many as 1800 fishing boats so that distress signals could be sent by these boats at the times of emergency. He further said that switching on the equipments was not done.
