Tips to keep your bike safe during monsoon

Posted on: 14/Nov/2017 12:39:16 PM
The poet in you may be pleased by the monsoon days with drizzles and downpours, but it is not so for the bikers. Apart from the tedious drives along the rainy, muddy roads, it is also tough and tiresome to maintain the dazzling look. So, to take care of your bike the best and give it the special care and pampering during monsoon, here are some good tips to you

Brakes
The first and foremost part of your bike that should be taken care of is the bike’s brake. So, there is no compromise allowed in keeping it the best. Riding on wet roads is definitely a big no as it gets too tough to control your bike. Further, on wet roads, it is not easy to apply sudden brake – this makes your ride even more challenging.

Regardless of the season or road condition, it is inescapable to keep your brakes under good conditions. The disks present within rum brakes and liners need to be kept clean. Also, the brake should contain sufficient oil. In case of drum brakes, it should be cleaned from within and ensured about good condition of brake shoes and pads. Any possible disc damage should be checked with disc brakes.

Parking
It is practically not possible to identify a covered parking lot for your bike once you head anywhere out. As much as possible, try not to park your bike in open space - both during summer as well as winter, because when parked under the sun during summer, the layer of painting on the bike tends to get faded out. To avoid this, applying a Teflon coating over the body of the bike will keep its look shining for longer.

Tyres
The next important aspect to take care of is the tyres in bikes. If your tyres are worn out, never take it for a ride. It is the tyre’s treads that give you the needed grip in dispersing the water stagnant on roads. There should be deep treads in tyres throughout – center and alongside the corners.

You can easily self-check the depth of these grooves using a one rupee coin. Insert a coin in the grooves and check whether there is at least 2 to 3mm depth in it. If the depth is lesser, it is time to get your tyre changed.

There is a lot of difference that the tyre pressure makes in terms of the grip while applying brake and while driving. Compared to the psi levels needed in tyres during dry seasons, the tyre pressure need to be lesser during monsoon days. Keep checking the tyre pressure often and ensure that it is of recommended levels.

In general, the tyre pressure gets low during hot days. Contrarily, during monsoon, the air gets colder and hence the tyre pressure dips. So, it is imperative to keep checking the tyre pressure often during monsoon, and also make sure that it is not overfilled.

Clean up air filter
As air will be heavy with moisture content during monsoon, functioning of air filter is not going to be as good as it is during summer days. As the filter tends to hold more moisture content, it gets clogged, and doesn’t allow air to past through. This may cause stalling, jerking or accelerator pulling in the bike. So, keep the air filter dry and clean.

Anti-rust protection coating
These days, most bike models come with fiber bodies that are resistant to rusting. There should however be s sturdy metal frame for extra layer of protection. You can get this through an anti-rust protection layer.

When there is uncovered drive chain in your bike, ensure that it is fully oiled. Keep washing it regularly as mud tends to get deposited on it, particularly during wet days.

With these tips, you can keep your bike safe and functioning well just the way it is during summer days!
