A rainy night for Chennai; heavy rains lash the capital city

Chennai rains, which were on a slight backseat for the past few days have once again made a comeback over the city. So much so that the city recorded rains of moderate intensity a day before of about 27 mm.

Not only this, the last 24 hours were also quite rainy for the capital city of Tamil Nadu. In fact, the city, during this time frame recorded heavy spell of rain. In a span of 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, the Nungambakkam observatory in Chennai recorded a whopping 61 mm of rainfall.

Presently, a north-south trough has been passing from Telangana up to the Coast of Tamil Nadu, in proximity of Chennai.

These rains in Chennai began during the night hours at about 7-8 pm and continued until late night hours. Twitter was full of residents sharing their joys/fears regarding the rains in Chennai. In fact, in a few areas, these showers are so intense that Chennaites were reminded of the 2015 Chennai deluge.

Areas including Sholinganallur, Velachery, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Porur, Chengalpet, Thiruvanmiyur, Tharamani, Ullagaram, Adambakkam, Ambattur, Avadi, Madhavaram, Korukkupet, Valmiki Nagar and other areas witnessed a few heavy spells of rain.

As per reports, several areas witnessed traffic snarls. In fact, people were asked to stay inside their offices if they had not left to avoid heavy traffic. Areas including traffic issues were from Vadapalani flyover towards Sterling Ashok nagar Junction, Nelson Manickam Road from Shanmugam Salai in towards Sterling Road Junction.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, light to moderate showers are expected to continue during the next 24 hours as well.
