Good Chennai rains to remain in hiding as light showers to continue

The saga of light Chennai rains has been continuing in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai from last 4-5 days. Though heavy showers have remained absent from showing up in the capital city.

In the last 24 hours also, some light traces of rains occurred in the city and the Minambakkam Observatory in Chennai recorded light rains of 6 mm. However, the Nungambakkam Observatory failed to record any rains during the above-mentioned time frame.

The reason for these rains as per Skymet Weather can be attributed to the trough that was running along coastal Tamil Nadu. As per the prediction by Skymet Weather, Chennai still has to wait for a couple of days more to witness some good rains as light showers are anticipated to continue.

Skymet Weather further reiterates that the north south trough which is running from Rayalaseema to north Tamil Nadu persists. Moreover, a feeble trough is also seen extending along the Tamil Nadu coast. Therefore, light to moderate showers is likely to continue in the state capital for the next 1 or 2 days.

Thereafter, rains are further likely to reduce in both Chennai and parts of interior Tamil Nadu. The intensity of rains will be more in the interior regions of the state as in contrast with the districts of the coastal part of the state. However, these rains will mainly be confined to show up during late afternoon or evening hours.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, the other districts of the state that had witnessed rains include Kodaikanal 12 mm, Dharmapuri 9 mm, Tiruttani 7 mm, Cuddalore 3 mm, and Coonoor witnessed just 1 mm of light spells.

So far Chennai has recorded a total of 104 mm of rains as against its monthly mean of 126.8 mm. Though the situation seems favorable for the city to be able to surpass its monthly target, it is still a wait and a watch situation.
