Traffic diversion in North Chennai

Southern Railway has proposed to lay new railway tracks from Chennai Harbour towards Royapuram, underneath the existing New Royapuram Bridge (NRT Bridge). In order to facilitate the construction work and to ensure the safety of the general public and motorists, the Southern Railway authorities have proposed to close the New Royapuram Bridge (NRT Bridge) completely for traffic movement temporarily.

In this connection Greater Chennai Traffic Police has planned the following diversion in traffic movement around NRT bridge for a period of 2 months from 25-07-2017.

At present the vehicles coming from Royapuram towards southern side i.e Kamarajar Salai, Santhome, Adayar, Thiruvanmiyur and beyond are plying through NRT Bridge and Rajaji Salai.

Temporarily, the vehicles coming from Royapuram towards southern side will be diverted via. M.S. Koil Street, Old Royapuram Bridge, Ibrahim Salai and Rajaji Salai to reach their destination. 

At present the vehicles coming from Royapuram towards Stanley Roundabout, Mint, Moolakothalam, Vysarpadi, Puliathope, Purasaiwalkam etc. are plying through NRT Bridge and Ibrahim Sahib Salai.

Temporarily, the vehicles coming from Royapuram towards Stanley Roundabout, Mint, Moolakothalam, Vysarpadi, Pulianthope, Purasaiwalkam etc. will take route via M.S. Koil Street, Old Royapuram Bridge, Ibrahim Salai, Stanley Roundabout, Old jail Road and reach their destination.

Similarly, at present vehicles coming from southern side towards Northern Side are using Rajaji Salai - Ibrahim Sahib Salai, Old Royapuram Bridge and MS Koil Street to reach their destination.

Temporarily, vehicles coming from Southern side via towards Northern Side will take route via. Ibrahim Sahib Salai – Thambu Chetty Street Junction - Stanley Roundana - Stanley Sub-way–Right turn - Cemetery Road - left M.S. Koil Street to reach Royapuram, Thiruvotriyur, Ennore, Manaliand their destination. (OR) Stanley Subway – Left Turn – Cemetery Road – TH Road – and reach Old Washermanpet- Tondaiyarpet – Korrukupet – New Washermenpet – R.K. Nagar, Kodungaiyur and their destination.

At present the vehicles coming from Vyasrpadi, Pulianthope going towards Parrys Corner are using Mint, Stanley Round about, Old Royapuram Bridge and NRT Bridge to reach Rajaji Salai.

Temporarily, vehicles coming from Vyasrpadi, Pulianthope going towards Parrys Corner will take route viaBasin Bridge Road, Wall Tax Road, EVR Salai to reach Parrys Corner. (OR) Basin bridge Road, Mint junction Old Jail Road, Stanley Rountana and Praksam Salai to reach Parrys Corner.

At present vehicles from Tiruvotriyur via T.H. Road going towards Parrys,s, are using Dr. Vijayaragavalu Street, Kannan Roundana, Parthasarathy Bridge, Mint Junction, Old Jail Road and Prakasam Salai to reach Parrys Corner and beyond (OR) North Wall Road, Padavattamman Koil Street, Peddu Naicken Street, Wall Tax Road and EVR Salai to reach Parrys Corner and beyond. The existing route shall continue.

The heavy vehicles such as Tankers, Lorries, Tipper Lorries etc. which are plying through NRT Bridge are restricted to ply in the following roads from 05.00 Hrs to 23.00 Hrs for a period of 2 months. 
  • S.N Chetty Street (From Kuppam Road Jn to N-1 PS.)
  • M.S. Koil Street
  • Old Royapuram Bridge
  • Ibrahim Sahib Street 
  • Rajaji Salai
  • Prakasam Salai
  • Wall Tax Road 
  • Old jail Road 
  • Cemetery Road 
  • Parthasarathy Bridge.
Commercial vehicles carrying goods to commercial establishments in Parrys and surrounding areas will be permitted only during night hours i.e 23.00 Hrs to 05.00 Hrs .

Prakasam Salai existing two way vehicular movement will be continued. There is no right turn to Ibrahim Sahib Salai.

Heavy vehicles from other districts towards Chennai (Oil tankers, containers and all other trucks to Chennai Port) should take the route on Tambaram – Puzhal Bye-pass upto Puzhal and via Madhavaram, 200 Feet Road, Manali Express Road, Ennore Express Road to reach Chennai Port or enroute Oil companies.

Heavy Vehicles leaving the city to other districtswill take route via Ennore High Road, R.K. Nagar Kuppaimedu, Moolakadai, Madhavaram Roundana (OR) Heavy Vehicles leaving the city to other districts will take route via Ennore High Road, Thiruvotriyur Ponneri Panchatti High Road, Inner Ring Road, , 200 feet Road, Madhavaram Roundana Puzhal Tamabaram Bye Pass and to reach their destination at South side, ECR Route, (Chennai south), Central Madras (Airport) and other destination.

The Following Roads will be made as One Way / Two Way.
  • The stretch of Ibrahim Salai from Thambu Chetty Junction to Rajaji Salai will operate as TWO WAY.
  • The stretch fromIbrahim Salai - Thambu Chetty Junction to Stanley Roundabout will be operated as ONE WAY.
  • The direction of ONE WAY WILL BE REVERSED on Old Royapuram Bridge.
  • Stanley Sub-way will be operated as ONE-WAY with an entry from Stanley Roundtana. No Entry from Cemetery Road.
  • The stretch of Cemetery Road from M.S. Koil street Junction up to Stanley Subway is made as ONE WAY with entry from Stanley subway and No Entry from M.S. Koil Street. 
  • The stretch of Cemetery Road from MC Road - Cemetery Road Jn to TH Road- Cemetery road Junction will be operated as TWO WAY. 
In this regard trial will be conducted on 22-7-2017 & 23-07-2017 (Saturday & Sunday).
