Chennai metro water department to reduce daily water supply

Posted on: 27/Jun/2017 12:20:30 PM
Even after the recent showers, there seems to be no significant improvement in storage levels in city lakes. As a result, the Chennai Metro Water department is thinking to slash down its daily water supply by half of the requirement per day at present. While the daily requirement in the city is 830MLD, the metro water department is now supplying 500MLD. Amidst these, after observing a brief relief after the recent rain showers, the department will furthermore reduce the supply by 30MLD and make the daily supply as 470MLD each day.

While the Chennai metro water department is also relying on various sources of water to cater to the needs of people in the city, due to depletion of water storage level at the lakes that is 117Mcft, this stands as rationale for deciding to cut down the daily water supply to the city.

One of the metro water officials report that the water level 10 days ago was 131 Mcft, but it has now reduced to 117 Mcft as of Monday (yesterday). The only way to practice is to reduce the water supply until we identify alternative ways of water procurement. Up to 70MLD water is sourced from the 4 major lakes: Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills and Cholavaram.
