News about plastic rice are making the rounds in the recent days. There are reports of fake rice being served in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. A lot of videos are going viral about the issue, and these have altogether panicked the people.

A journalist from Telangana came forward with a claim that he was served with Briyani prepared with plastic rice at a hotel in Saroornagar. There were many people who followed his footsteps and started complaining about fake, plastic rice being offered at local grocery outlets. This in fact is not a problem prevailing within India, but other countries as well including Singapore, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

How do they look?
The look of plastic rice is quite the same as regular rice, but it is located with a lot of chemicals.

Chemicals used in plastic rice include phthalates. This can resist your hormone and reproductive system. Once you consume these, it will then become very difficult to shed it out of your system.

Luckily, we have a few easy ways of distinguishing plastic rice and real rice right at your home. Without the use of any chemicals, you can perform these tests at home. Some easy methods are listed below:

Boiling test:
This is the simplest of all ways. In the cooked vessel, if the rice forms a thick layer, you can confirm it as plastic rice.

Water test:
Take a glass full of water and put raw rice inside it and stir. If the rice floats in water, it is plastic rice, and if it gets immersed inside the water, it is real rice.

Fire test:
Lighter a handful of rice and check whether it is emitting any burning plastic smell. If yes, it is plastic rice.

Hot oil test:
Pour a few drops of oil on a hot pan. Sprinkle some rice in the pan. If it gets melt and form a sticky layer, you can confirm it as plastic rice.

Fungus test
Take a container and put boiled rice into it. Leave it as it is for 3 days. When there is no fungus formation, it is for sure plastic rice.
