Hotels in Tamil Nadu on strike protesting the imposition of GST

Posted on: 29/May/2017 12:44:55 PM
The Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association has informed that all the hotels will remain closed tomorrow (Tuesday, 30th May) as a token protest against the imposition of GST (Goods and Services Tax) by the central government.

The secretary of the Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association explained that until now, a tax of 0.5% was levied on the hotels with an annual income of less than Rs. 50 Lakhs. However, this has now been increased to 5% s per the new GST to be imposed by the central government.

For the hotels with the annual income of more than Rs. 50 Lakhs, the tax until now was 2%. Now, as per GST, this has been increased 6 times and will be 12%.

For the hotels with air-conditioned facilities, the tax was 8%. This has been increased to 18%. All these increased taxes are bound to affect the public quite severely.

Though the Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association had submitted a petition to withdraw the additional tax, there has been no response. So, as a protest against the increased GST, a 1-day token strike will be observed tomorrow (Tuesday, 30th May) when all the hotels will remain closed.

Around 1.5 Lakhs Hotel Owners are participating in this strike. The stand of the Hotel Owners Association is that all ordinary hotels should not be charged more than 5% tax. So, the central government should accept our fair demands and respond accordingly. The new taxes to be imposed must be withdrawn.

Apart from this, the All India Pharmacies/Chemists Association has also informed that the medical shops will remain closed on tomorrow (30th May) as a token of their various demands including the main demand that the central government must not allow online sales of medicines.
